Older Female Smiling and Squinting EyesIf you have loose or missing teeth, and you’ve been researching options to have them replaced, you’ve surely seen a lot of talk around the web regarding dental implants. And for good reason! Tooth-replacement systems of old really don’t compare to these permanently, natural-looking prosthetic teeth. And if you live in the Virginia Beach area, you have access to some of the most qualified dental implants specialists in the state at Coastal Virginia Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.

When our doctors meet with their Virginia Beach patients for dental implants consultations, they always discuss the timeline for their specific treatment plan. Because each patient has different needs and expectations, we can’t provide you with an exact length of time it will take to complete your treatment, but we can provide you with how long you can expect it to take from a general standpoint.

The Dental Implant Initial Consultation

Before treatment can begin, every prospective patient will first visit with one of our doctors for an initial consultation at their Virginia Beach office. During this visit, our doctors will:

  • Determine your needs and expectations
  • Perform a full clinical and radiographic exam
  • Take advanced images with a cone beam CT scan to evaluate the nerve, bone, and sinus cavity
  • Discuss your individual treatment options based on your needs and desires

Once you decide to move forward with your procedure, our doctors will develop models of your mouth using advanced scanning techniques. Additionally, they will create a customized surgical guide that will be used to place your dental implants into your jawbone at the optimal position.

Dental Implant Treatment

It’s true that dental implant placement does take some time and several appointments. However, how many appointments and how long your entire process will take will depend on a few things:

  • Do you have adequate jawbone tissue, or will you require a bone graft?
  • Are your gums healthy, or will you require a gum graft?
  • Is there enough space in your upper jawbone to receive dental implants, or will you require a sinus lift?

If our doctors determine you will need one or more pre-surgeries prior to placing your dental implants, your entire treatment plan could take as many as 9 months to complete. This will allow for pre-surgeries to be completed and healing to take place so our doctors can safely place your dental implants.

On your surgery day, our doctors will use your preferred method of sedation to make you comfortable during your procedure at their Virginia Beach office. They will then begin your procedure by making small incisions in the gums to reveal the jawbone underneath. Our doctors will then surgically place each implant in your jawbone at specific angles. After the implants are secure, our doctors will close your gums up, and you’ll be able to return home and begin your healing process.

After the dental implants have permanently fused to your jawbone, you will return to Coastal Virginia Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery to have the abutment placed on top of your dental implants. This piece will protrude from your gums, and it is the piece your new prosthetic tooth crowns will rest on. Our doctors will then be able to attach your new crowns or bridges without any additional invasive procedures.
